Do you ever catch yourself debating where to spend the next slice of budget—Google Ads, a study fair, another listing site, while the what you’ll say stays on autopilot?
Tactics feel concrete, measurable… safe. Yet the bigger win usually hides in the story you choose to tell, and how faithfully you keep telling it.
It’s like fishing: the pond matters, but if the bait doesn’t tempt the fish you want, moving to a different spot won’t make much of a difference.
A quick real-world example
CODE University of Applied Sciences in Berlin built its entire presence around one promise: learning by doing.
- It features alumni on the homepage – including their current company and job title
- Every programme page spells out the hands-on method
- Social “day in the life” videos from students (like this one by Anais) show projects, not lectures
I recorded a 5-minute Loom video in which I review some of their webpages and highlight the small touches that make the promise feel real. Watch it here >
Realitycheck…
If you work in a large, multi-faculty university or simply at a school that isn’t so mission driven, making your messaging clear-cut is a lot harder – and that applies whether you’re a junior marketing officer or the institution’s CMO.
The good news is that you don’t need a full rebrand to move the needle. You can start small:
- Pin down what truly sets you apart – not “world-class facilities”
- Collect proof – student work, data, outcomes
- Show, don’t tell – Find ways to creatively showcase each proof point. Whether it’s through a photo, a quote, a mini case study.
Do that consistently and your story will start to shine through!
