I spent last weekend painting our gutters. It’s hands-on, satisfying work my teenagers and I actually enjoy. But I won’t touch wiring, and I’ll get professional help to plan a garden redesign. When the stakes are high and there are many unknowns, expert input pays for itself.
What this means for small marketing teams
Doing more in-house has real upsides: variety, faster collaboration, and a deep understanding of your audience. Not to mention the cost savings…
But I’ve also seen Google Ads accounts over-rely on default recommendations — broad match everywhere, auto-applied suggestions, weak conversion tracking — and literally burn hundreds of thousands of euros before anyone noticed.
There are areas where you can’t afford NOT to get expert input.
The practical middle road
Keep most execution in-house and bring in specialist support where it matters most:
- Setup and guardrails for Google Ads, SEO, CRO and analytics
- Periodic audits and second opinions
- Designing tricky experiments and interpreting results
This saves cost, builds team capability, and keeps you closer to what works without flying blind.
