When you need to get something done, you have two extremes to choose from—and a lot of grey space in between.
- Do it yourself
- Hire someone to do it for you
This applies to pretty much everything, from fixing a leaking tap to running a marketing campaign. And, like in home improvement, the right choice depends on your goals, resources, and what you want to learn along the way.
If you handle things in-house, you save money and gain knowledge, but it takes time and attention. If you outsource, you get results faster, but you risk losing touch with the details that make all the difference.
Finding the middle ground
Take Google Ads. You can run campaigns yourself, but if you’re not tracking conversions properly, you’re just burning money. On the other hand, if you outsource everything, you may miss important insights about your audience.
The best results usually come from a mix—understanding the key performance metrics while leveraging expert guidance to optimize what’s working.
How I work with teams
I love working with hands-on clients and empowering them to do their best work. It takes flexibility on both sides. That’s why I move between three modes:
- Done for you – When there’s no internal capacity to run campaigns, I handle execution.
- Done with you – My client manages the daily work, while I provide guidance, troubleshoot issues, and step in when needed.
- Training and coaching – The best option when a team wants to upskill and take full control over time.
What works best for you?
Where do you fall on the DIY–Outsource spectrum? Have you ever shifted between approaches? What worked (or didn’t)?
